Procedure: Read the book together, taking time to talk about what life was like long ago. What did the colonists face when they came to the New World? Different groups of people faced different problems (eg. European colonists, African slaves). Ask questions throughout the process to be sure that the student understands the concepts. Point out illustrations, timeline and captions. When you are finished reading the book, have student work on crossword puzzle. See how much of the puzzle can be done without the wordbank. Then use the wordbank to complete the remainder of the puzzle. Check answers with the solutions puzzle. Choose a vocabulary activity to reinforce meaning.
